The Phuket Marriott Resort Merlin Beach of Sonya & Charlie from Australia marked the perfect end to my 2023 Thailand wedding photography season. As a professional Thailand wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky to document countless destination weddings across the country—but this one was especially memorable for its energy, humor, and the incredible chemistry between the couple.
A Destination Wedding Filled With Fun and Heart
Sonya and Charlie traveled from the UK to Phuket, Thailand, with their closest family and friends to tie the knot in one of the island’s most picturesque venues—Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach. Nestled along a quiet private cove just south of Patong, this five-star beachfront resort offers the perfect combination of convenience, luxury, and stunning ocean views for couples planning a wedding in Phuket.
But like many great wedding stories, this one had an unexpected twist.
Just one day before the big day, Charlie managed to dive headfirst into the shallow end of the resort’s pool, giving himself two black eyes! Fortunately, Sonya had a great sense of humor, and the couple took it in stride. With a little help from makeup, strategic camera angles, and some post-production magic, we kept Charlie looking sharp in every photo.
A Smooth Ceremony and Stunning Backdrop
The couple exchanged vows in an intimate beachfront ceremony framed by tropical florals and swaying palm trees. The resort’s dedicated wedding lawn provided a peaceful setting with the sound of the waves in the background—an ideal place for a heartfelt ceremony in paradise.
After the ceremony, we took advantage of the golden hour light for a romantic couples portrait session on the beach and around the resort grounds. As a Phuket destination wedding photographer, I always look for natural light and emotion to tell the full story of the day—and this one had plenty of both.
An Unforgettable Evening of Dancing & Celebration
Once the sun set, it was time for the real party to begin. The reception kicked off with speeches, toasts, and cake cutting under a canopy of twinkle lights. But the true highlight of the evening? A wild dance floor that didn’t stop until late into the night.
Sonya & Charlie and their guests truly embodied what a Thailand destination wedding is all about: love, laughter, and unforgettable moments shared in a tropical paradise.
