Destination Wedding in Thailand from Hong Kong

Under four hours from Hong Kong to the beach. Here’s how to plan it properly, from a photographer who has lived in Phuket since 2009.

I’ve photographed more than 700 weddings in Thailand since 2011. Hong Kong couples are some of the kindest, easiest couples I’ve ever worked with. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing over 100 of them, and what they care about most is the experience, their traditions and having their families beside them. Planning from Hong Kong usually means juggling two families, sometimes two languages, and a guest list spread across Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas.

This page is everything I’d tell you over coffee: which island suits you, when to come, how to handle the legal side so your marriage counts back home, and how to fit a pre-wedding shoot into the same trip.

01 · Why Thailand

Why Hong Kong couples choose Thailand

The short answer is distance. A destination wedding in Thailand from Hong Kong is closer than a weekend in Tokyo for some of your guests.

Then there’s the setting. You can’t get a cliff-top ceremony over the Andaman Sea, a private villa for 40 people and a beach dinner in Hong Kong. In Thailand you can have all three in one weekend, often for less than a hotel ballroom at home.

Direct flights to Phuket

Cathay Pacific and HK Express fly non-stop. The flight is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.

Direct flights to Koh Samui

Bangkok Airways flies non-stop daily, about 3 hours 20 minutes.

Easy entry

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can visit Thailand visa-free. The Hong Kong Immigration Department confirmed in July 2024 that the stay was extended from 30 to 60 days. Rules change, so check again before your guests book.

A wedding that’s also a holiday

Your guests fly out Friday night and have three days of sea, food and sunsets before they’re back at work.

02 · Choosing your island

Phuket, Koh Samui or Krabi?

I shoot all three, and I’m based in Phuket, so take my bias into account. Here’s how I’d honestly match them to couples.

Best weather · Nov – Apr

Phuket

The easy choice for most Hong Kong couples

Direct flights, the widest choice of luxury resorts and private villas, and plenty of hotels at every budget for guests. If your guest list is over 50, or you have older relatives travelling, Phuket makes the logistics simple. Best weather: roughly November to April.

Driest · Jan – Aug

Koh Samui

Quieter, more private, and a different season

Samui sits on the Gulf of Thailand, so its weather runs on a different calendar. The driest stretch is usually January to August, which makes it the better pick if you want a summer wedding. There’s a daily direct flight from Hong Kong, which most people don’t know.

No direct flight

Krabi

For the views

Limestone cliffs, longtail boats, turquoise water. Krabi has fewer luxury venues and no direct flight from Hong Kong, so most guests connect through Bangkok or fly into Phuket and drive about two and a half hours. For a smaller wedding where the scenery matters most, it’s hard to beat.

My rule of thumb
Choose the island by your month, not the other way round. A Phuket wedding in September can be beautiful, but you need a real rain plan. A Samui wedding in November usually needs one too.

03 · Making it legal

Making it legal: what Hong Kong couples need to know

This is the part I get asked about most, and the part couples most often get wrong. I’m a photographer, not a lawyer, so please confirm the details with the Immigration Department or a family lawyer. But here’s how it generally works.

For most Hong Kong couples, the simplest route is to register the marriage at home and hold the celebration in Thailand. It’s less paperwork, and it avoids a legal trap I’ll explain below.

What I usually recommend

Option 1: Register in Hong Kong, celebrate in Thailand

  1. Register your marriage at a Hong Kong marriage registry or with a civil celebrant, before or after the trip.
  2. Hold your ceremony in Thailand exactly how you want it: Western vows, a tea ceremony, a Thai water blessing, or all three. It’s symbolic, so there are no forms, no office visits and no restrictions on time or place.

More planning

Option 2: Marry legally in Thailand

It’s possible, but it takes planning:

  1. Before you leave Hong Kong, get a Certificate of Absence of Marriage Record from the Immigration Department. It proves you haven’t registered a marriage in Hong Kong. Processing normally takes about 7 working days.
  2. In Thailand, your documents need to be translated and legalised before you register at a local district office. That means building a few working days in Bangkok or your island into the trip.
  3. Back home, you can’t register an overseas marriage with Hong Kong’s Registrar of Marriages. Instead, you notify the Immigration Department so your marital status is updated.

The “two weddings” trap

Here’s the thing nobody tells you. If you legally marry twice, once in Thailand and again in Hong Kong, only the first ceremony counts as the legal marriage. That can cause real problems years later with paperwork. Pick one place for the legal part, and treat the other as a celebration.

Same-sex couples

Thailand legalised same-sex marriage in January 2025, and I photograph same-sex weddings here. Recognition back in Hong Kong is a separate legal question, so talk to a lawyer before deciding where to register.

04 · Your planning timeline

A planning timeline that works

After 700+ weddings, this is the rhythm I’ve seen work.

WhenWhat to do
12 months outPick the island and the month. Book the venue and your photographer; peak-season dates (December to March) go first.
9–10 months outSend save-the-dates. Hong Kong guests book flights early around holidays like Christmas and Chinese New Year.
6 months outDecide where you’ll register legally. Book hair, makeup and florals.
3 months outPlan the day’s timeline around sunset. I’ll help you with this.
1 month outFinal guest numbers, seating, and your rain plan confirmed in writing.
Wedding weekWelcome dinner, ceremony, and a beach day after. Your guests flew a long way. Give them a reason to stay.

One tip on timing
Schedule the ceremony about an hour before sunset. The midday sun in Thailand is harsh on guests and on skin tones in photos. The last hour of light is soft, warm and flattering. It’s the single biggest thing that changes how your photos look.

05 · Pre-wedding

Pre-wedding photoshoot in Thailand

Pre-wedding photos are a big part of weddings in Hong Kong. Thailand is one of the best places to shoot them, because you can be on a deserted beach at sunrise, in a fishing village by mid-morning and on a cliff for sunset, all in one day.

Some couples come over just for a pre-wedding shoot. Others add it to the wedding trip, the day before or after, so there’s no rush on the wedding day itself. Either works. If your gown and suit are for the banquet in Hong Kong, bring them. Sand and saltwater are part of the fun, so we plan outfit changes carefully.

A real example. The portrait beside this text is from a pre-wedding shoot in Phuket with a Hong Kong bride-to-be.

06 · About Daniel

Why couples trust me with their day

I came to Phuket in 2009 and started photographing weddings in 2011 with a borrowed camera and about $1,000 to my name. Since then I’ve photographed more than 700 weddings across Thailand, and LUXLife Magazine named me Thailand Wedding Photographer of the Year in 2019, 2024 and 2025.

What that experience gives you is mostly invisible. I know which resort lawns flood after a storm. I know where the sun drops behind the headland in March versus November. And I know how to keep a timeline on track without being the stressed, bossy photographer nobody wants at their wedding.

I shoot the day as it happens. A little direction where it helps, then I get out of the way.

“We couldn’t be happier with our experience with Daniel!! From our very first meeting, he made us feel comfortable and captured our day exactly as we had hoped. Daniel’s knowledge of the location meant he knew all the best spots for photos, and understood how to make the most of the lighting and scenery. His tips and guidance made the whole day feel effortless and produced photos that exceeded our expectations.”

Frequently asked questions

About 3.5 to 4 hours non-stop. Cathay Pacific and HK Express fly the route direct. Koh Samui is about 3 hours 20 minutes on Bangkok Airways’ daily direct flight.

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free; the allowed stay was extended to 60 days in July 2024. Guests travelling on other passports should check their own rules, and everyone should double-check before booking, as entry rules change.

A marriage legally registered in Thailand is generally recognised in Hong Kong, but you can’t register it with the Hong Kong Registrar of Marriages; you update your status with the Immigration Department instead. For most couples it’s simpler to register at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Thailand. Confirm your situation with the Immigration Department or a lawyer.

For Phuket and Krabi, December to March is the most reliable. For Koh Samui, February to August. Avoid booking blind around Christmas and Chinese New Year, when flights and venues fill up early.

Yes, and I recommend it. Shoot the day before or after the wedding so you’re not rushing on the day. Bring the outfits you’ll use at your Hong Kong banquet.

For peak season, 9 to 12 months ahead. I only accept 25 weddings a year, so popular dates go early.

It depends on hours, locations and whether you add a pre-wedding shoot or video. My packages are listed on the investment page, and there’s a full cost breakdown in my Thailand wedding cost FAQ.
